Swear That You Won't Change: An Interview with Mountain Head

by - October 21, 2022

Brothers Kyle and Ben Hannah have truly been learning as they go since they released their first single as duo Mountain Head in 2019.

After sharing several singles that year - “We Stole Your Head”, “Gaslight”, “Soul Stain”, “Shimmy Shimmy Ya” and “Circuit” - the following year brought them to the same place as the rest of the world: locked down in their own home. They released two singles in 2020 - “Your Own Ocean” and “Make It Mundane” - and ended up creating an annual charity concert that was able to take place in person.

Live from the Boathouse has been taking place at Kashwakamak Lake, where the audience is safely distanced in their boats and can drop off non-perishable food items in a turquoise paddle boat that is then donated to a local food bank. They also have a raffle consisting of local gifts and prizes that also raise money for the food banks.

“Since we couldn't play we just scrambled and found a way to play that was ‘ok to do’ at the time when you couldn't do anything in Ontario,” Kyle said. “It's gotten bigger and bigger every year, we've raised more and more money, more and more food; it's getting wilder and wilder every time.”

This year’s event saw well over 100 boats passing by, and even a mosh pit in the middle of the lake.

In addition to learning how to bring their community together, they have also been learning the ins and outs of radio play. Their single “Let It Out”, complete with $200 sock puppet music video, was when they really began their radio journey and found themselves on Indie88, The Edge, The Peak, and even made their way onto the Billboard charts.

“We took the risk,” Ben said. “It's something we didn't expect to happen, let alone break the top 30, so through that we’ve just been learning as we go. It’s just waves in the sea.”

“These days it's so hard to see a consistent pattern,” Kyle added. “We're just throwing stuff at the wall and seeing what sticks. Just classic, not making it too complicated, but showing up and being persistent is like a winner every time.”

They released a six-track EP at the beginning of the year, featuring both previously released and never-heard singles. They’ve also found themselves touring a bit more, even making their first trip to California to perform at Avalon. It was a refreshing experience, especially after years of playing just to a camera.

Their latest single, “Automatic”, crept out of nowhere, as the brothers said. They were working on a completely different song when Ben found the rhythm while adjusting his pedal board. All it took was a look between the brothers, and within 10 minutes the song was written.

Yes, it came to them automatically.

“Automatic” is almost a dance between childhood nostalgia and contemplation of adulthood. It shines a light on life while discussing the spark that dims as wonder and whimsy turns to sensibility.

While taking risks and learning as they go, Mountain Head makes sure to show up every day. Through the madness of it all, they are watching their music catch the attention of many, and bring on new challenges that can inspire the next release.
