Cowboy Boots and Rainbow Roots: A Cooper Bloom Guest Blog

by - June 01, 2023

Stepping onto the country music stage is a courageous act of authenticity for me, Cooper Bloom, a proud, gay artist from the small town of Barrie, Ontario. As a young boy, my second album ever purchased was by the legendary Shania Twain. I was hooked by the distinct sound of her music - a blend of country with pop elements that transcended traditional musical boundaries. My musical journey mirrors that of my youth, fusing my love for country with the dynamic melodies of pop music.

Growing up, I found myself between the two worlds of pop and country. Some of my songs have deep roots in country, with the heart and soul of the genre, while others lean more towards pop with tinges of country elements. The blend of these styles has produced melodies that are inherently pop in nature, allowing listeners who might not typically enjoy country music to connect with my work.

Fashion is another passion of mine, and it plays a significant role in my journey as a country music artist. In a genre where men's fashion often leans towards traditional styles, I strive to bring a fresh, vibrant approach.

The journey to my authentic self wasn't without its obstacles. Initially, I found myself influenced and swayed by others who felt I should focus more on pop. Being openly gay, I encountered those in the industry who warned that the path to becoming a country artist would be filled with closed doors and steep challenges. However, my love for country music remained unwavering, and my competitive spirit, fostered from years as a dancer, thrived on these challenges.

Eventually, after exploring different musical genres, I found myself coming full circle, arriving back at the genre I genuinely loved - a fusion of country and pop. Recognizing both my strengths and weaknesses as an artist was a vital part of this journey. And it has been incredibly rewarding.

Only a few months into diving headfirst into the country genre, my music has resonated with a broad audience. I've caught the attention of international blogs, top-tier producers like Timbaland and industry professionals in the music business. I've even had opportunities to write for some of the biggest country artists today. Each of these milestones fuels my determination to carve out a space for myself in the country music scene.

My mission extends beyond the notes and lyrics of my songs. I want to shatter traditional stereotypes and pave the way for others who feel they don't fit the conventional mold. I hope to encourage others to remain true to themselves, despite societal expectations or limitations.

I'm thrilled to share my journey with you on this platform, Black is the New AP Style. I want to extend my gratitude for hosting me during their Pride Month edition. As a gay country-pop artist, my aspiration is to be a beacon of hope and inspire everyone to pursue their passions relentlessly, just as I have with my love for country music. Here's to transforming challenges into stepping stones, one country-pop tune at a time!
