Gather 'round the open fire for Chimneyside Chats - a monthly feature with holiday stories from our favorite artists. See what's in their stockings this year as they reminisce on Christmas memories, share their favorite recipe and more! Here's what songwriter and vocalist Kristen Anzelc had to say:
As Blink-182 perfectly puts it, "We'll have Halloween on Christmas", and that’s exactly what we’ve done. There’s something about pairing Christmas cheer with a touch of horror that makes the holidays feel even more alive (pun intended).
To help you get into the holiday spirit, I’ve rounded up my top 10 favourite Christmas movies - an even mix of horror and non-horror classics, all guaranteed to make your season bright (or delightfully spooky).
Jingle Bells and Jump Scares: Kristen Anzelc’s Spooky Christmas
Horror Christmas Favourites:
- The Nightmare Before Christmas: Perfect for when you can’t decide if you want Christmas or Halloween vibes (spoiler: it’s both).
- Black Christmas (1974): Terrifier star Lauren LaVera put me onto this one, and now it’s a holiday staple. If you haven’t seen it, you’re in for a chilling treat.
- Krampus: A go-to, no question.
- Gremlins: Equal parts mischievous and nostalgic, this one holds a special place in my heart. Bonus: My late cat shared a name with the adorable gremlin, Gizmo.
- Terrifier 3: I’m amazed by what the Terrifier team has pulled off with these films and am loving the Christmas/horror crossover!
Jolly Christmas Favourites:
- How The Grinch Stole Christmas (starring Jim Carrey) – Because who doesn’t love the Grinch?
- Home Alone 2: Lost in New York – My personal favourite—what’s better than The Plaza Hotel, cheese pizza, and a sundae in the Big Apple during Christmas?
- Bad Santa: A dark comedy that never fails to deliver laughs.
- Elf: Another Christmas film set in the incredible New York City, starring the hilarious Will Ferrell. An easy yes for me.
- A Charlie Brown Christmas: Nostalgia at its finest, this heartwarming cartoon always brings the feels.
For me, the holidays are all about those simple, joyful moments spent with the people I love most. Whether it’s watching a movie, singing along to holiday tunes, or enjoying a delicious meal, it’s really about being together. After all, the greatest gift is the time we share with friends and family.
